Chiropractic care during pregnancy
The body of a pregnant woman undergoes a lot of changes throughout its pregnancy. The body will release a hormone called relaxin that loosens the ligaments, muscles and joints which can make a pregnant woman more prone to injuries and joint pain. The relaxin allows the pelvis to adapt to the growing fetus and prepares you for delivery. The adapting pelvis will often become hypermobile, which might cause low back pain due to joint dysfunction as well as muscular tension and imbalance. The body will also undergo a lot of postural changes due to the shift in center of gravity from the growing belly.
The hypermobility of the joints and postural changes can cause musculoskeletal complaints including:
- Low back pain
- Sciatica
- Piriformis syndrome
- Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
- Mid back & rib pain
- Headaches
- Neck pain
- Pubic symphysis pain
- Hip, knee, ankle pain
The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic technique that addresses the neuro-muscular imbalance of the pelvis. Pelvic misalignment can cause uterine constraints and can be the culprit of the musculoskeletal complaints a pregnant woman might experience during their pregnancy. It can also help with labor outcomes by improving the physiological function of the pelvis. Chiropractic is very safe for pregnant women and the Webster technique can benefit both mom and baby.
